A solution is said to be unsaturated when more solute can dissolve in the given amount of solvent at a particular temperature. If a solid crystal of the solute is placed in the unsaturated solution it will decrease in size as it dissolves. The solute particles dissolve in the solvent. The rate at which particles leave the crystal is significantly greater than the rate at which solute particles stick to the crystal.
